· Air sacs in Pudding’s lungs form now and the lungs begin to secrete a greasy substance called surfactant. Without surfactant the fetal lungs would stick together and couldn’t expand after the baby is born.
· Besides the active lung growth, Pudding’s brain kicks in with brain wave activity for the visual and auditory systems. Brain wave activity for hearing and sight begins to be detectable.
· Brain tissue and neurons are all developing at a rapid pace, increasing Pudding’s brain activity and will continue to function at accelerated levels for the first seven to eight years of childhood!
· Fetal brain scans show response to touch. If you shine a light on my abdomen, our baby will turn his head, which according to researchers, means his/her optic nerve is working.
· Although they’ve been sealed shut for the last few months, our little one’s eyes are opening and beginning to blink this week. Babies are born with blue or gray-blue eyes (which may change colour in the first 6 months of life), however babies of other ethnicity are born with brown or dark eyes.
· Pudding’s retinas begin to form.
· Pudding has also recently acquired the ability to say “yes” and “no” in rudimentary sign language as he/she can now move his/her head back and forth.
· This is also the time where our little super star’s head hair is starting to grow! A cute little cowlick or two may be springing into position right now.
· Also, Pudding’s toenails have grown in and our little one continues to slowly pile up fat beneath his/her still-loose skin.
· Our baby may weigh about two pounds now (average is 1.7 pound, 760gm) and is 14 inches (35.6cm) in length
